A population can be made up of anything you want to study – plants, animals, organisations, texts, countries, etc. With descriptive and correlational designs, you can get a clear picture of characteristics, trends, and relationships as they exist in the real world. However, you can’t draw conclusions about cause and effect (because correlation doesn’t imply causation).

Typically, case studies are used to zoom in on a very specific part of a body of research and present it as one researchable topic. After all, communicating with the people you’re designing for helps you develop a sense of empathy and care for their needs and desires, enabling you to make quicker and more informed decisions on a regular basis. While the other areas of UX tend to have conferences that cater to their factions, trends, or best practices, researchers are by nature generalists, who seek out ways to learn more about humans and usability.

Beyond focusing solely on researching with users, design research can also explore aesthetics, cultural trends, historical context and more. It involves collecting data through surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The aim of descriptive research is to provide an accurate and detailed portrayal of a particular group, event, or situation.
